A measuring tube is a small cylindrical vessel with a rounded bottom and a polished neck, specially made of glass for use in the laboratory. The test tube belongs to the category of specialized laboratory glassware, it is a universal vessel that is used in a large number of experiments, as well as for measuring liquids used later in various studies. The test tubes can also store chemicals, including volatile ones, thanks to the sealed glass lid. A measuring scale is applied to the side wall of the volumetric flask. Graduation is not erased from contact with chemicals.
Volumetric tubes are indispensable in conducting chemical experiments with minimal amounts of substances in the conditions of the need to use an accurately measured amount of a reagent. Mostly volumetric test tubes are made from special borosilicate or quartz durable glass, but there are also test tubes made of polypropylene. Glass test tubes are resistant to heat treatment and mechanical stress.
Laboratory chemical test tubes have the following qualities:
- reliability of the material structure
- strength
- possibility to use repeatedly
- heat resistance
- the ability to heat on an open fire
- preservation of the material when closed with a cork
- high quality glass
- low expansion ratio
